Apparao Shankarrao Kolekar was born on 14th Nov 1936 at Tuljapur, Dist: Dharashiv (Osmanabad), Maharashtra. Shri Shankarrao Kolekar & Smt Sonabai S. Kolekar were his parents. Apparao was the eldest son and lost his mother when he was a toddler.
His childhood was spent in the surroundings of the Aai Tuljabahvani mandir& Arradhwadi, Tuljapur. He had his schooling at Zilla Parishad School, Tuljapur. According to his teachers he was academically strong and their favourite studenttoo. Especially, he had personal liking for Mathematics. He used to regularly go to Talim (AKaDa) for Indian traditional workouts and wrestling.
He was the most favourite student of the Shri Yashwant Ballal (B.A. English), Headmaster of the Zilla Parshid School, Tuljapur.
Apparao used to fondly share that his teacher, Ballal Sir, used to welcome students to his residence on Sundays to teach English for free along with refreshments too. As, in the rural parts of the country, during those days, English was the most feared subject by the students. Such was the dedication of teachers during those days.
Apparao had 5 brothers and 2 sisters, since finances of family were fragile & weak, he had to support his academics & higher education through EARN & LEARN. After tenth class he moved to Hyderabad in the erstwhile Nizam rule, for graduation and post-graduation from Osmania University, Hyderabad.
Apparao, first completed B.Sc. and later M.Sc. (Geology) with First class in 1958. Initially, he worked as teacher at Govt school in Upsinge, Tal: Tuljapur and later on shifted to Nanakram Bhagwandas Science College Hyderabad as Lecturer. Meanwhile, he received offer letter from Canada for job, which he declined at the request of his beloved grandma, Smt. Anusaya N. Kolekar. After, one year he received appointment as Scientific Officer, from O.N.G.C. (Oil & Natural Gas Commission) in Cambay, Gujarat.
On 02nd Feburary 1964, Apparao got married to Kusum V. Metkari at Tuljapur. They have four daughters – Anasuya, Ahilya, Anjali and Arundhati and one son – Yashwant.
As, Apparao, was the eldest son, he had to shoulder the responsibilities of his parents, brothers, sisters at Tuljapur and his own family in Gujarat. Till the marriage of his eldest daughter in Dec 1985, he shared the responsibilities of his parents.He gave the best education to his children resulting in all children accomplishing highest degrees from reputed educational institutions – Kendriya Vidyalaya, M. S. University Baroda, Jhunjhunwala College Mumbai, DAV college Solapur, Walchand College of Engineering Sangli, Sardar Patel College of Engineering Mumbai, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai etc. He raised money for their higher education by spending for minimum bare necessities of family through curtailing unnecessary expenditure,due to which he could not own any house or plot or agricultural land or asset of his own.
Apparao served in the Geology Department at various places – Cambay, Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Sibsagar, Silchar during his service at ONGC. His friends from school, college and ONGC till date remember him with love and share his memoirs.
Apparao was fond of classical and old songs. He most of the times used to visit friends in ONGC in the evening to listen to these songs on Gramophone. Especially, he loved the songs sung by Talat Mehmood and often sung those melodies. It was rather difficult to differentiate as to which voice was of Apparao or Talat sahab.
On 28th March 1989, he breathed his last at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai at the age of 52 years. He was fighting Jaundice for 3 months and even doctors were surprised by his will power. However, destiny was written.
He left behind his wife and 5 children. Before departing this world, he had bestowed the best education, morals and values to his children. He sowed the seeds of Serving the Nature and Mankind in his children.
This foundation is the result of his teachings and sowing the seeds in his children.
